Scale and depth
Everything looks differentbeneath the surface.
A vessel crossing open water gives away almost nothing about the water it crosses. Enterprise records behave the same way. The reporting surface is calm, reconciled and internally consistent, while the activity that matters sits far below it.
Four depths
The higher you look from, the less there is to see.
Board reporting
Totals, variances and commentary. Everything reconciles because every system reconciles to itself.
Management reporting
Volumes, margins and exception counts. Anything unusual is explained by a process owner and closed.
System of record
Ledgers, billing runs, contracts and operational logs. Each remains internally consistent.
Record level
Individual transactions, timestamps, identifiers and counterparties. This is where two true systems disagree.
The descent
We work at the depth where the records stop agreeing.
Nobody is looking down here
Each team is accountable for its own numbers. No one is accountable for the space between two systems, which is exactly where exposure accumulates.
Volume is the cover
At millions of records a period, a pattern that repeats a few thousand times still reads as rounding at the reporting surface.
Depth is the whole method
We reconcile systems against one another at record level, then trace every material statement back to the preserved original evidence.
What comes back up
Findings, not impressions.
A finding is only a finding when a named analyst can trace it to source records, a reviewer agrees, and the exposure is calculated deterministically with stated inputs. Everything else is discarded.
The surface is a summary. The evidence is underneath it.
